What Causes us to Mass Consume?

Today the modern world has many different ways in which we can express our thoughts and opinions on a wife range of brands and products. Millions of people have different types of social media, Twitter, Facebook, snapchat, instagram and flickr, all in which you can comment, like or dislike on a variety products, decorations or ANYTHING you can consume.

Consumers can easily contact bosses, executives and secretaries of  companies, with phone numbers, email or addresses and their opinions, ideas or comment on different products, brands, website, social media and any other purchable items.

Many people have access to the internet or wifi either using their phone or computers, this meaning that if they want to buy a product and not sure what the pro and cons are, they can easily pick up their phone and research that product to find out more about it in depth.

The average person has 234 followers/ friends on twitter, facebook or instagram, so if they like a picture, comment or video of a product or brand, 66% at least of their “friends” will also like it and a few might even buy it, so it is actually“free” advertising for that company.

Most consumers know quite a bit about the product they but before they purchase it because of digital media it has given the consumer a more in depth knowledge about that product. So the assistant taking that consumer around better know  their facts incase the consumer corrects them.

If  a products is visualised either on a billboard, magazine, website or T.V, the consumer will see that product and actually be able to look at it and see all the texture, patterns or colours and know it is real, not made up. It is much to see something than visualise it, as the saying is “seeing is believing”.

23 years ago in 1991 the Swedish government cancelled all unapropriate advertisement for children, the two main cancelling target were alcohol and tobacco ads. Since then it has been that way, everywhere it should be that way, for a child to see some thing like that is disgusting.

The average child from the age of 2 to 17 watches an asthoniwing amount of 18000 hours of T.V and only spends 15000 in school working. Just to imagine how many adverts, how many unapropriate adverts.

Every year 45000 Canadians die form tobacco smoking every year and thousands stop, because of this the tobacco industry target teenagers with of cool people smoking and the teens copy because they want to be cool like the actors in the adverts.

In many children T.V shows there is smoking and drinking. Millions of children watch the Simpsons and see Homer or Bart smoking, the child thinks it’s funny, but the child or anyone doesn't realise that this is actually free advertising for the tobacco industry and is influencing the child so when he is older he will think it is fine to smoke because he saw “Bart” do it.

Tabacco advertising has been banned from most countries and is nearly never seen on T.V or on billboards. It is the complete opposite for alcohol advertisment. There are ads everywhere, on Billboards, on T.V, in magazines and even on the internet. Thousands of children watch these and get the wrong impression and sometimes start themselves.

Alcohol ads sponser dozens of rock concerts, sporting events and cinemas. The actors in the ads are either fancy, well dressed or attractive, adults or children see these actors and how cool they are and try to be act, dress and completely copy them in everything they do. That is the key to advertisement, get a well known actor in your ad and your product will definitely be popular.

Peer or any kind of pressure influences our purchasing choices. It is one of the main causes of mass consumerism. When your friend has a new pair of nike trainers and he starts teasing because you because you don't have the same pair and so overtime you drive past a billboard and see that same pair of trainers it reminds you of your friend and how he is going to tease you tomorrow, so you go out and buy that pair of nike trainers just because you don't want to be teased and stick out.

40% of people watching are on their computers or tablets, surfing the internet or playing games. The whole time while they are on the web ads are hoping up on the screen about the latest car or the newest computer and telling why you should buy it. You can easily press cancel or no, but happens if you a ad that says “Buy this car and win R100000!” You get influenced and press buy meanwhile the car probably costs R200000 so you not even making a profit, then  it turns out to be a scam! And you just lost R200000, didn't get or any money back!

Change:

There are so many reasons why you should stop Mass Consuming, here are a few:

  • The average American has $ 15 799 of credit on their credit card, less consuming means less credit to pay off

  • You less products to upgrade, wash and clean and repair, this meaning less money will spent on you “toys”

  • Less pressure to impress you friends, family and classmates with your new fancy items you have acquired.

  • It is not only less pressure on yourself, it is less pressure on the Earth  to create resources to sustain our wants, the Earth has enough resources to sustain our needs not our wants

  • Last off, more respect for the environment, more time mohave walks on the beach or in the park instead of playing on your computer, tablet and T.V
